Cheltenham Gold Cup contenders limber up for showpiece
|
With the clock counting down to one of the most prestigious events in the horse-racing calendar, the excitement continues to gather ahead of the four-day Cheltenham Festival. The mixture of top racing and a unique atmosphere makes it an eagerly anticipated event.
It is fair to say that racing legends are made at the Cheltenham Festival and none more so than at the meeting's showpiece event, the Gold Cup which takes place on the final day as the climax to the entire jump season. Last year it was the turn of the large Irish contingent to celebrate as AP McCoy rode Synchronised to victory, trained by Jonjo O'Neill and veteran owner JP McManus, who will be eager to see his horse retain the trophy this year too.
However, there are plenty of rivals desperate to take the title in March. The Gold Cup betting this year is centred on trainer Nicky Henderson's stable and includes favourite for the race Bob's Worth. The eight-year-old is unbeaten in four races at Cheltenham and won last year's RSA Chase, making him the fancied horse for the big one this time round. Henderson will also have high hopes for Long Run, who finished third last year and has won this prestigious race before. If you are looking for the luck of the Irish when it comes to the big race, then look no further than Sir Des Champs, trained by Willie Mullins. He has won two previous races at Cheltenham and narrow defeats this season at Punchestown and at the Lexus have revealed that Sir Des Champs has plenty of character. Away from the favourites, Captain Chris is worth a punt as the nine-year-old, who lost narrowly in the King George looks to fulfil his potential.
